In many countries, older people are becoming less physically fit than they were in the past. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem?

People are living longer than ever before; however, many elderly individuals are not as physically fit as previous generations. This decline can be attributed to several factors, including increasingly sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary habits. Nevertheless, a combination of personal commitment and government intervention can effectively address this issue.

One of the primary reasons why many older adults experience poor physical fitness is the lack of regular physical activity. Following retirement, many individuals adopt a sedentary lifestyle, spending long hours watching television or using electronic devices instead of engaging in exercise. As a consequence, their muscles gradually weakens, their flexibility decreases, and they become more vulnerable to chronic illneses. Another contributing factor is the widespread consumption of processed and high-calorie foods. Owing to their convenience, many elderly people rely on ready-made meals that are rich in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, which often lead to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Several measures can be taken to improve the physical well-being of older people. First, governments should invest in community fitness programmes specifically designed for senor citizens.providing affordable exercise classes, walking groups, and well-equipped public parks would encourage older adults to remain active. Furthermore, healthcare professionals should educate elderly people about the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and exercising regularly. family members also have a vital role to play by motivating their elderly relatives to participate in outdoor activities and adopt healthier lifestyles. Were these measures to be implemented consistently, the overall health of the ageing population would improve significantly.iin conclusion, the decline in physical fitness among older people is mainly caused by sedentary habits and poor nutrition. By promoting active lifestyles through public initiatives, health education, and family support, societies can help older adults remain healthier, more independent, and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Examiner feedback

The essay is well-structured and demonstrates a strong command of academic English, particularly in its use of cohesive devices and complex sentence structures. To move to a higher band, the writer should ensure all aspects of the prompt—including social factors like loneliness—are explored with equal depth, and eliminate minor mechanical errors in spelling and grammar.

Task Response - 7

- Addresses the main parts of the task regarding physical fitness and reasons for its decline. - The 'loneliness' aspect mentioned in the prompt is only indirectly addressed through social solutions, rather than being explored as a core problem. - Presents a clear position and well-supported main ideas throughout the response.

Coherence & Cohesion - 8

- Information is sequenced logically with a clear progression from problem to solution. - Cohesive devices such as 'As a consequence' and 'Another contributing factor' are used effectively. - Each paragraph has a clear central topic, though referencing within the second paragraph could be slightly more varied.

Lexical Resource - 7

- Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary including academic and topic-specific terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'cardiovascular diseases', and 'government intervention'. - Spelling errors are present but do not impede communication ('illneses', 'senor', 'iin'). - Collocations are generally natural, though 'experiencing poor physical fitness' is a bit repetitive.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy - 7

- Demonstrates a variety of complex structures, including an advanced conditional inversion ('Were these measures to be implemented...'). - Frequent error-free sentences are present, showing good control overall. - Minor errors in subject-verb agreement ('muscles... weakens') and occasional punctuation/capitalization slips ('family' after a period) prevent a higher score.
