Proponents of early schooling argue that it fosters discipline and accelerates cognitive development, while advocates for a later start emphasize the importance of play‑based learning and emotional maturity.

Those who support early schooling contend that structured environments help children develop essential habits such as punctuality, following instructions, and working independently. Starting school at age four or five, as is common in many countries, allows children to build a strong academic foundation early on. For instance, early exposure to literacy and numeracy can give students a head start, potentially improving their long‑term academic performance. Additionally, early schooling can enhance social skills by encouraging interaction with peers and adults outside the family circle.

Conversely, supporters of a later start believe that young children benefit more from unstructured play and family time. They argue that play is a crucial vehicle for learning, enabling children to explore their environment, develop creativity, and build problem‑solving skills in a low‑pressure setting. Delaying formal education until age six or seven may allow children to reach key developmental milestones, such as emotional regulation and sustained attention, which are vital for effective learning. In my view, a balanced approach is most effective.
