The line graph compares the total births and deaths in a European country between 1950 and 2050.

Overall, death rate showed a relatively steady upward trend, whereas birth rate fluctuated considerably. Although the total births were higher at the beginning, the number of deaths is expected to exceed it at the end of the period.

In 1950, approximately 790 thousand people were born in Europe, compared with about 700 thousand deaths. The birth rate then rose significantly to 1 million in 1970, while the figure for death remained relatively unchanged. However, the two figures followed opposite trends thereafter. Birth rate fell considerably to 600 thousand in 1990. Consequently, the gap between two figures became relatively small.

From 1990 onwards, the number of births increased slightly to approximately 700 thousand in 2010. By contrast, the number of deaths decreased gradually, reaching about 680 thousand in 2030. Births are predicted to remain stable at around 700 thousand between 2030 and 2050, whereas deaths are expected to rise sharply to approximately 800 thousand by 2050.
