The pie charts compare the percentages of holidaymakers who chose four different types of accommodation in 1988, 1998 and 2008.

Overall, staying with family was the most popular form of accommodation throughout the period, although its share declined slightly by 2008. In contrast, rented apartments became increasingly popular, while camping experienced a substantial fall. The proportion of tourists staying in hotels rose and then remained stable.

In 1988, more than half of all holidaymakers (52%) stayed with family. Camping was the second most common choice at 26%, followed by hotels at 15%. Rented apartments were the least popular option, accounting for only 7% of tourists.

A decade later, the percentage of people staying with family increased marginally to 54%. However, the figure for camping fell sharply to 13%, representing a decrease of 13 percentage points. At the same time, rented apartments became more popular, rising from 7% to 11%. The proportion of holidaymakers choosing hotels also grew significantly, reaching 22%.

By 2008, staying with family remained the leading accommodation type, despite falling to 44%. The share of tourists renting apartments doubled compared with 1998 and reached 22%, equalling the figure for hotels, which remained unchanged. Camping continued to decline slightly, accounting for just 12% of holidaymakers.
