The line graph illustrates the percentage of people in four different age groups who visited the cinema at least once a month between 1984 and 2003.

Overall, the proportion of regular cinema-goers increased substantially across all age groups over the period. In addition, younger people consistently recorded higher attendance rates than older individuals, with the 15–24 age group remaining the most frequent cinema visitors throughout.

In 1984, approximately 18% of people aged 15–24 visited the cinema at least once a month, compared with around 10% of those aged 25–34. The figures for the 35–49 and 50+ age groups were considerably lower, at roughly 5% and just over 1%, respectively. During the following decade, attendance rose steadily in all four categories, although the increase was more pronounced among younger audiences.

From the mid-1990s onwards, cinema attendance accelerated markedly. By 2003, the percentage of monthly cinema-goers in the youngest group had climbed to just above 50%, representing the highest figure on the chart. Likewise, the proportion of 25–34-year-olds increased significantly to approximately 35%, while the figure for those aged 35–49 reached around 20%. Although people aged 50 and over remained the least frequent visitors throughout the period, their attendance also rose considerably, finishing at roughly 15%.
