The bar charts illustrate the percentages of school-aged males and females who received secondary and higher education in four regions of the world in 2000.

Overall, Europe had the highest percentages of students at both education levels, while Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the lowest figures. In addition, females generally had higher participation rates than males.

In secondary education, Europe recorded the highest figures, with both males and females at around 100%. In contrast, Sub-Saharan Africa had much lower percentages, with 30% of males attending secondary school compared with only 20% of females. In Latin America, approximately 50% of males received secondary education, while the figure for females was considerably higher, at around 70%. In East Asia, the percentages for both genders were almost the same, at about 70% for males and just under 70% for females.

In higher education, Europe again had the highest proportions, with around 60% of males and 70% of females attending colleges and universities. By contrast, Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the lowest figures, at approximately 7% for males and 3% for females. In Latin America, about 20% of males received higher education, compared with around 15% of females. East Asia also showed relatively low percentages, with around 10% of males and 7% of females.
