The given bar chart depicts the proportion of males and females using the Internet for many different purposes -- emailing, shopping online, getting news, banking, using social media, and conducting research -- in a particular country in the years, 2007 and 2009.
Overall, the proportion of female users of the Internet was higher in four out of six categories, namely email, online shopping, banking, and social media, while males had a higher preference for reading news. Meanwhile, the proportion of males and females showed similar level of engagement for research. Notably, email was the most popular among both genders, whereas social media and research had the lowest figures for males and females respectively.
With respect to most preferred options, email stood out as the most prominent, 70% for females and approximately 65% for males. Similarly, females dominated in banking with 50%, compared to males, comprising roughly 45%. Conversely, males showed higher engagement in news, amounting to around 55%, closely followed by females with 50%.
Regarding less preferred categories, females were more likely engage in online shopping than males, accounting for nearly 45% of the former and 40% for the latter. The ranking of genders in social media followed a similar pattern, representing the dominance of females with approximately 35%, which was marginally higher than the proportion of males (25%). In contrast, the proportions of males and females recorded in research each accounted for 30%.
