The following pictures illustrate the transformation of an area among the years of 1800, 1900 and 2000. Overall, the area has undergone significant modernization, characterized by the introduction of new infrastructures and the diversification of regions, despite the removal of some original features.

In 1800, the central area housed a waterway named river Stour where it was surrounded by 4 regions. One of the regions was named Brindell and was situated in the southwestern region of the area while farmland animals resided on the adjacent side in the southeastern zone. The northwestern area served as a farmland as well but was consisting of crops instead while the northeastern section was an area where wood was available.

After a decade, majority of the area was maintained except for the southeastern zone, where farmland animals were replaced by a small industry and a village called Bun Hill for the workers to reside. By 2000, the area changed significantly. In the south, Brindell has expanded more than twice its original size and the eastern area increased in size as well with a larger industry and village established. The crops farmland in the north remained stationary but has become smaller due to the extention of the eastern woodlands region with a newly built Bun Hill park enclosing the area. Due to the diversification of the 4 territories, the central river was more constricted than in the 1800.

Examiner feedback

This is a solid Band 7.0 performance. The response clearly describes the progression of the area from a rural setting to a modernized one. To improve, the candidate must ensure factual accuracy (correcting the 'decade' vs 'century' error) and refine grammatical precision in relative clauses and verb tenses.

Task Achievement - 7

- The response covers all three time periods (1800, 1900, 2000) and identifies key changes in the area. - A clear overview is provided in the first paragraph, highlighting the trend of modernization and diversification. - There is a significant factual error: the student refers to the gap between 1800 and 1900 as a "decade" instead of a century. This affects the accuracy of the data representation. - Most key features are highlighted, though the description of the river's change could be more precise.

Coherence & Cohesion - 7

- Information is organized chronologically, which is a logical approach for this task. - Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different time periods. - Cohesive devices like "Overall," "In the south," and "By 2000" help the flow of information. - Some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical list-like feel in the 1800 description.

Lexical Resource - 7

- A good range of vocabulary is used: "transformation," "modernization," "diversification," "constricted." - Spatial language is used well: "southwestern region," "adjacent side," "northeastern section." - There is a spelling error: "extention" should be "extension." - Some word choices are slightly awkward, such as "remained stationary" (usually applied to objects in motion rather than land use).

Grammatical Range & Accuracy - 7

- A variety of complex structures is attempted with a good degree of success. - Grammatical errors are present but do not impede communication: "where it was surrounded" (should be "which was surrounded") and "was consisting" (should be "consisted"). - Punctuation is generally well-controlled.
